Skills tracking

The Skills Tracking module lets you define a technique catalog for each discipline and record individual member proficiency over time. Coaches can assess members on any skill and track their progression from first exposure through to mastery. A radar chart on each member's overview page gives a visual snapshot of their current skill profile.

Configuration

Skills must be enabled and configured in Settings > Disciplines. Create a skill catalog for each discipline before recording assessments.

Skill catalog

Each discipline has its own skill catalog. A skill represents a specific technique or knowledge item -- for example, "Armbar from Guard" or "Guard Passing Fundamentals".

Proficiency types

When creating a skill, you choose how it is assessed:

  • Graded -- The skill uses a four-level progression: Introduced → Practicing → Proficient → Advanced. Use this for techniques where you want to track improvement over time.
  • Binary -- The skill is either completed or not. Use this for knowledge checks, certifications, or one-off requirements (for example, "Attended safety orientation").

Tags

Skills can be tagged for grouping and filtering -- for example, "Guard", "Takedowns", "Competition Rules". Tags help coaches find related skills quickly during bulk assessments.

Creating skills

  1. Navigate to Settings > Disciplines.
  2. Select the discipline and open the Skills tab.
  3. Click Add Skill and provide the name, description, proficiency type, and optional tags.
  4. Drag skills to reorder them within the catalog.

Assessing members

To record or update a member's skill level:

  1. Open the member's profile.
  2. Go to the Skills tab.
  3. Find the skill in the catalog and select the appropriate proficiency level.
  4. Optionally add notes about the assessment (for example, "Showed good hip movement, needs work on grip breaking").

The assessment records the date automatically and tracks which coach performed the evaluation.

Proficiency levels

For graded skills:

LevelMeaning
IntroducedThe member has been exposed to the technique and understands its basic concept.
PracticingThe member is actively working on the technique and can execute it with guidance.
ProficientThe member can execute the technique reliably in live situations.
AdvancedThe member has mastered the technique and can teach or adapt it.

For binary skills, the only option is Completed.

Radar chart

The member's Overview tab displays a radar chart when they have at least two graded skill assessments on record. Each axis represents a skill, and the distance from the center reflects their proficiency level (1 = Introduced, 4 = Advanced).

The radar chart gives trainers and members a quick visual summary of strengths and areas for development. Binary skills are not included in the radar chart.

Belt curriculum

Skills can be associated with specific belt levels to define curriculum requirements. A skill can belong to multiple belts (for example, the same guard-passing technique might appear in both the white-belt and blue-belt curriculum at different levels of expectation).

Belt–skill associations are managed from the belt settings within each discipline. This integration is optional -- you can use skills tracking independently of the graduation module.

Using skills with class occurrences

When scheduling or reviewing a class, coaches can tag which skills were covered in that session. This creates a link between the occurrence and the skills, making it easy to see which techniques were taught on any given day.

When an occurrence is tagged with skills, members who attended can optionally be marked as Introduced on those skills automatically -- useful for bulk-setting the first exposure level after a technique-focused class.

Skills and graduation

When the graduation module is enabled, skill proficiency data feeds into the belt promotion workflow. Belt levels can define minimum skill requirements, so a member must reach a certain proficiency across relevant techniques before becoming eligible for promotion.

See the Graduations page for details on how belt promotions work.
